A graduate of East Syracuse-Minoa HS, Costello helped make Niagara University one of the top college programs in the early 1950's. He had a 12-year playing career in the NBA where he led the league in Free Throw Percentage two times. As a coach, he led the Milwaukee Bucks to the 1971 NBA title. He concluded his career coaching at Utica College.
