Coach Athanas began his coaching career as a middle school boys and girls coach and JV girls coach. In 1986, he became the varsity girls coach at John Glenn HS in the Elwood School district. His varsity teams have won 13 League Championships, 4 Suffolk County titles, 3 Long Island Regional Championships, 1 NYSPHSAA Championship and 1 Federation Championship.  He has won 369 games in 30 years. His 2004-2005 Federation team was undefeated at 29-0.  He has been League Coach of the Year 15 times, Suffolk County Women's Basketball Coach of the Year,  BCANY Section 11 Coach of the Year 2 times, BCANY State Coach of the Year 2 times, Newsday All Long Island Coach of the Year and New York State Sports Writers Association Coach of the Year. Coach Athanas has served as league representative, volunteers at its annual clinic, and supports Coaches vs. Cancer. He has worked 15 years at the Lu-Hi Summer Basketball Camp. Coach Athanas started the Elwood Sports Summer Programs which began as a one week basketball camp and today includes 15 sport specific camps and services more than 1000 kids each summer.
